Sirens
This candle holder sculpture its inspiration from the mythical creatures of Sirens were sea nymphs who were Persephone's companions. When Persephone was abducted by Hades, her mother Demeter gave them a bird's body to help her in her search. When they could no longer find her they settled on an island from where they used their beautiful song to attract the sailors of the ships that approached their territory and then caused their destruction.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus had been informed by Circe of their charming song with which they would entrap unsuspecting travellers, who, on approaching, would either forget their destination or be devoured by them, so he ordered all his crew to put a candle to their ears so that they would not hear the Sirens' song, while he himself asked to be tied to the mast so that when he heard their song he would not be carried away by their charms.
