Alkionis Egs

€1,100.00

This artwork its inspired from Alkioni. In Greek mythology, Alkioni, daughter of Aeolus, lived happily with Cyrus by the sea. Their happiness was such that at one point they considered themselves the equals of immortal gods. This, as might be expected, angered the dodecatheon. In fact, when the pair began to call each other by the names of Zeus and Hera instead of their own, Zeus waited for Cyrus to sail one day, and fired a thunderbolt at his ship. Alkione watched the shipwreck from afar, and at the sight of her husband drowning, she rushed into the sea from a high cliff to be killed. At that moment, the gods changed their minds and took pity on them, and transformed them into birds, with the name of Alkionis. As birds with bright blue wings now, the pair continued to live by the shore, and lay their eggs in the heavy winter. But the raging sea was destroying their eggs, so in a final show of compassion, Zeus decided to bring a few days of sunshine and summer each year in the middle of winter to allow the alcyonas to clutch their eggs. Hence the Alkionides days.
