Argos
This sculpture its inspired by Argos, meaning "shining" or "bright," or alternatively as Panoptis, "the one who sees everything."
Argos had eyes all over his body, both in front and behind his head, and it is said that when he slept, only half of these eyes would close while the others remained vigilant. The only instance when Argos completely fell asleep occurred while he was guarding Io, transformed into a cow, on Hera's behalf (to prevent Zeus from turning her back into a woman). During this watch, Hermes, sent by Zeus, lulled him to sleep with his flute and then killed him. To this day, it is believed that the hundred eyes of Panoptis are represented on the peacock's tail, a bird emblematic of Hera and the starry heavens.
